Founder’s Story
Over the years, I’ve become increasingly frustrated by how noisy, addictive, disposable, and, ugh, exhausting – endless scrolling, forced feeds, constant screams of “Like me!”, “Subscribe!”, “Buy this!”, “Watch that!” – today’s biggest platforms are lumbering algorithm-led beasts intent on holding attention at almost any cost. Worse still, talented creators struggle to be heard and are often paid a pittance for the hard work these same platforms use to their huge financial advantage.
Having worked in tech since the early days of the internet, I remember a time before true advertising and monetisation even existed online – and while you could wait an age for a download that may well have been destined to stick resolutely at 97% until 1999, it was a far calmer, quieter place where time spent felt purposeful rather than passive; engaging rather than impulsive.
Call me nostalgic, but I’m thinking back to a time many of us Gen Xers remember fondly – in much the same way we remember Sunday trading laws. Oh yeah, we were often as bored as hell at work, but the threat of your boss giving you a project to ‘cure’ that boredom sparked creativity like nothing else, Baby Cha-Cha being a case in point (if you know you know, if you don’t, look it up you Millennial, Gen Z/Alpha/Beta whippersnapper)...OK, OK, so I’ll concede that back in the day the internet wasn’t always purposeful and productive, but it most certainly held a very different kind of purposelessness than it does today. Anyway, I digress, my main point is that I found myself asking a simple question:
Can I create an ad-free app that leaves its users feeling inspired, energised, better informed, and in a stronger mental state than they were before they opened it…while also FAIRLY rewarding hardworking creators?
This question became the seed that grew SkillSeeds
Creators Unite
As a writer (did you guess?) and musician, creativity is a necessity to me, and as a creator, I understand the challenges of generating art and content that genuinely connects with people to build a strong, loyal, and authentic audience.
Alongside my creative background, I also spent years working within the tech industry – including being one of the first employees at lastminute.com during the dot com boom, as well as later working for well-known tech giants including Microsoft and Facebook.
This industry experience gives me a unique perspective into both how digital platforms are built, and how they shape behaviour. I’ve seen first-hand how powerful technology can be when it genuinely helps people – but also how damaging unhealthy engagement patterns can be.
Like many creators, I know how obstructive and challenging the current online economy is. Platforms reward volume and virality over quality and value, meaning talented creators can spend years building audiences, yet still struggle to earn a meaningful income. The entire system is little more than a tech-treadmill that leaves creators gasping for breath and the air thick with throw-away content.
I want to grow something different.
A platform where: carefully crafted content is rewarded for its lasting value; where engagement is thoughtful and purposeful; where creators are supported rather than exploited; and where people of all ages and abilities can feel safe, welcomed, and inspired to learn and grow.
Why Short-Form?
There’s no question about it, people love bite-bized content, and while this format often gets a bad rep for being shallow and spammy, the problem isn’t the format, it’s how the format is most commonly used – to drag in viewers for viral clicks and likes with little regard for the ‘true’ human value of the content.
SkillSeeds is built differently, yes, it’s all about short-form content, but its focus is on quality, useful knowledge and real creators sharing real skills.

Trust
Trust is another major motivation behind SkillSeeds. I want to build a platform that feels calm, safe and intentional. As a parent to young children, and a guardian to an adult with autism and additional learning needs, I’m hugely mindful of the importance of online safety and healthy digital spaces.
One thing I have become increasingly aware of is how overlooked adults with additional needs often are online. Platforms tend to swing between two extremes – either completely unmoderated environments, or experiences that feel infantilising and restrictive. I wanted SkillSeeds to offer something different. A platform that feels welcoming, respectful, safe, and empowering – without talking down to people or treating adults like children. This philosophy has shaped the platform from the very beginning.
I want parents, carers, grandparents, and families to feel differently about SkillSeeds. To say: “You’re on SkillSeeds? That’s fine. Have another half hour before bed.”. That feeling matters. The internet desperately needs more spaces people can trust.
The Seed Economy
One of the most unique parts of SkillSeeds is its economic ecosystem – instead of relying on ads and attention, it’s built around its own virtual economy in which seeds are used as currency to both unlock lessons (as a learner) and publish lessons (as a creator). Creators earn seeds when people engage with their content, which can then be reinvested on the platform or converted into real earnings. It’s a system designed around:
Learning
Participation
Creativity
Value exchange
Sustainable creator rewards
Not endless passive consumption.
From the beginning, I wanted smaller creators to have a real chance to succeed. You shouldn’t need millions of followers before your knowledge has value, so SkillSeeds is designed to reward meaningful engagement and useful teaching – not just viral reach.
From the Ground Up
While SkillSeeds is still little more than a ‘sprout’, what excites me most is that it already feels bigger than ‘just another app’, it feels like something that could grow into a platform that offers a healthy place for users and creators alike to experience the very best of digital creativity. It has been bootstrapped 100% independently.
No team
No outside investment
No corporate machine
Just me, many late nights and early mornings, 99.97%* belief in the project, and (some may say blind) persistence.
*Disclaimer: estimate only – wild fluctuation in belief was observed on many an aforementioned late night/early morning.
The Vision
My goal isn’t to flood SkillSeeds with thousands of random uploads. I want to build a trusted ecosystem filled with thoughtful creators, meaningful lessons, and people who genuinely want to learn and grow. I believe there’s room in the world for a platform that prioritises quality over noise, growth over addiction, learning over mindless engagement, and long-term value over short-term virality. Technology should help people bloom – not burn out, so I hope you will join me on this journey to turn…
